HSN/TSN Lookup – Find a Vehicle Type and German Registration Count

Find a published vehicle type using its German registration codes, or look for possible entries by manufacturer and trade name. A match shows the available German registration count at the stated reference date.

Reference date: · KBA registration extract

Enter registration codes or search by manufacturer and trade name.

Free, with no account or document upload. Lookup loads only FRALIMO-hosted data and does not store a personal search history.

Selected HSN directories

Each directory covers one HSN group in the snapshot. Other HSNs remain available through the search.

Where are HSN and TSN on the German registration document?

On the German registration certificate Part I, HSN appears in field 2.1. Use the first three characters of field 2.2 for this lookup. The remaining characters in that field are not decoded here.

Field 2.1 refers to the manufacturer designation; field 2.2 contains the type-related code and check digit. Older German registration documents use the headings “zu 2” and “zu 3”.

Understanding the codes and counts

What do HSN and TSN identify?

HSN is the German manufacturer key and TSN is the type key. This lookup combines a four-digit HSN with a three-character TSN to find a published type-reference entry. The pair does not identify an individual vehicle. Manufacturer and trade names retain the source spelling.

Finding possible codes without the registration document

Choose “Search without codes”, select a published manufacturer name and then filter by model or trade name. A manufacturer can appear under more than one HSN. Search abbreviations help discovery without changing which records belong to a source label. Compare any candidate with the codes in your vehicle documents.

Why can one model have several matches?

One trade name can correspond to several type keys. Multiple names within a single source row remain one entry. A name alone does not reliably establish engine, model year, fuel or equipment, so the lookup does not provide those filters or confirm parts compatibility.

How should I read the German registration count?

The number belongs to the selected HSN/TSN entry at the KBA reference date shown beside it. It is not a live count, a production total or a sales figure. Candidate counts are not added together to give a model total. Missing or qualified values stay visibly distinct from zero. The reference date is not the model year.

Why might my code be missing?

This extract is not a complete history of every code ever assigned. Check all four HSN digits and the first three characters in field 2.2, retaining leading zeros. An absent or zero-filled code does not establish that a code is invalid or that no vehicles remain. The source covers motor vehicles (Kfz); without a vehicle-class field, its entries are not all described as passenger cars.

How is this different from a VIN?

A vehicle identification number (VIN, FIN in German) identifies an individual vehicle. HSN and TSN provide a type reference instead. This tool does not need a VIN, number plate or personal details. It does not authenticate an individual vehicle or confirm its current registration.

Data source and limits

Obtained through orVIN and converted into searchable data for FRALIMO. Published manufacturer and trade names are unchanged.

The dated extract is not a complete historical type catalogue. An absent entry proves neither that a code is invalid nor that zero vehicles remain. Missing numbers and source markers remain visible, without inventing an undocumented reason. This conversion is not a service or endorsement by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority.
