P0401 – Exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient
P0401 means the monitoring system detected insufficient exhaust gas recirculation flow. EGR is the usual abbreviation for this emissions-control system.
Powertrain · Exhaust gas recirculation
Open this code in the decoderMeaning and affected system
EGR returns some exhaust gas to the intake under suitable operating conditions. The valve, flow passages and monitoring work together. A flow finding therefore cannot be assigned to the valve alone.
Possible causes
- Deposits or restrictions in the recirculation path are possibilities.
- A sticking valve or a problem with electrical or vacuum actuation can affect operation.
- Depending on the engine, other components such as an EGR filter may be involved; these are not fitted to every vehicle.
Possible symptoms
- The check engine light may illuminate.
- Hesitation, uneven idle or reduced performance can accompany EGR faults; P0401 can also occur without these complaints.
Useful diagnostic considerations
- Review accompanying codes and the operating conditions recorded with the fault.
- Assess requested operation, available feedback and a manufacturer-specified actuator test together.
- If deposits are found, investigate why they developed to reduce the risk of a repeat fault.
What this code does not prove
An electrical test alone can miss a mechanical blockage. Visible valve movement does not confirm sufficient flow through every passage.

The causes listed are possibilities without a likelihood ranking. This page cannot replace diagnosis of the vehicle. A code alone confirms neither a failed component nor that continuing to drive is safe. The actual condition, warnings, handbook and applicable manufacturer diagnostics determine the next step.
